An art exhibition dedicated to the anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War began to work in the Croatian capital, TASS reports. The works of the Soviet artist Meyer Axelrod are presented in Zagreb. The exhibition was organized by the Alexander Pechersky Foundation. According to its head Ilya Vasiliev, the exhibition called German Occupation in the Works of Meyer Axelrod was the first experience in holding such events in European countries. He noted that it was no coincidence that  Zagreb was chosen for this purpose, as a military conflict happened there very recently.

Ilya Vasiliev expressed confidence that the works presented in the exposition will tell Europeans the story they do not fully know. The exhibition clearly represents the terrible disasters that the inhabitants of Russia experienced during the Great Patriotic War.

About three dozen graphic works by Meyer Axelrod are presented to the attention of the inhabitants of Croatia. The evidence of prisoners of concentration camps allowed the artist to depict the atrocities of the Nazi invaders. One of the first visitors was the mayor of Zagreb Milan Bandic and the Russian ambassador Anvar Azimov.

The grandson of the artist Mikhail Axelrod spoke at the opening ceremony. According to him, even before the war, his grandfather created many portraits of residents of Jewish towns in Belarus. He painted children and old people. And after the outbreak of the war, he realized that practically none of those he had captured on paper was left alive. Then he began to work on a series presented at the exhibition. Throughout his whole life, this remained the artist's eternal pain,  Mikhail Axelrod added.
