For the first time in many years, the Russian language has entered the top five most popular languages for studying in the European Union, the Bloknot website reports.

Almost three percent of Europeans study the Russian language. According to the results of the research, the majority of them live in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Bulgaria. The Russian language outstripped Italian, which ended up being sixth.

The study was conducted by Eurostat specialists. They found that more than fifty percent of EU residents speak two or more foreign languages. Most of them come from Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Iceland and Finland. About eighty percent of the inhabitants of Latvia and Lithuania can also speak several languages. The last places in the ranking were taken by Austria and Hungary. English remains the most popular among the foreign languages, French is the second popular choice. German closes the top-3.
