Russian compatriots living in Canada have already begun to celebrate Maslenitsa or Pancake Week. In February, the holiday was organized by the Russian-Canadian Cultural and Educational Society in Toronto. On the first of March, Maslenitsa festivities will take place in Ottawa, Montreal and on the Slavic Farm near Toronto, the press service of the organizations of Russian compatriots of Canada reports.

In Toronto, the guests cooked pancakes and other dishes of Russian cuisine and took part in a concert. Toronto residents will be able to once again celebrate Maslenitsa in one of the city’s parks on March 1, the event will be held by the Russian Canada public movement. According to the organizers, the Pancake week dishes will become “entrance fee” - pancakes, dumplings, and jam will be taken instead of payment. The event offers Russian folk games, round dances and a festive program.

In Ottawa, guests will be offered dishes of Russian, Moldavian and Ukrainian cuisine, and well-known Russian-speaking ensembles will take the stage. It will be possible to purchase handicrafts of folk craftsmen at the festival.

In Montreal, Maslenitsa will be celebrated with a craft fair with master classes, a program with buffoons and mummers. The organizer will be the Canadian Foundation for Russian Culture. The Slavic Farm, in addition to treats and traditional Pancake Week fun, will hold a sports tournament.
