The Berlin International Film Festival kicks off on Thursday, February 20, in the German capital for the 70th time. Iconic figures of art and documentary cinema brought their work to the festival. The program of the forum includes many Russian films, as well as features related to Russia, the Izvestia newspaper writes.

In particular, the Dau multimedia project by Ilya Khrzhanovsky entered the main Berlinale competition. At first it was planned as a film about the famous scientist Leo Landau, but was divided into several short films later. One of the them, Natasha, will be screened at the festival. The main characters of this drama work in the canteen of a secret research institute.

The Berlinale Special program also includes the six-hour Degeneration feature. It is dedicated to the last years of the research institute.

The new competition program includes the premiere screening of Gunda by Viktor Kosakovsky, which is dedicated to the inhabitants of the barnyard, and the Foundation Pit by Andrei Gryazev. The latter is assembled entirely from YouTube videos. Their authors address the Russian president.

Welcome to Chechnya! by David Franc will also premiere during the festival. Russian director Askold Kurov acted as an operator and one of the producers. The authors applied the innovative technology of casting the faces of actors on film characters.

It is also planned to screen Sasha Svirsky’s animated short film My Galactic Double Galaxion, Vadim Perelman’s major international project Farsi Lessons, and Maria Ignatenko’s art drama, The City Has Fallen Asleep.

Malmkrog by famous Romanian director Kristi Puy is based on the work of the Russian philosopher Vladimir Solovyov.
