The Russian team won the medal standings of the European Championship in wrestling. The competitions took place in Rome, the Russian participants won 22 medals, including nine gold awards. The Russian team is preparing for the Olympic Games, which will be held in the summer, TASS reports.

More than half of the gold medals, namely five, were brought to the national team by freestyle wrestlers. Azamat Tuskayev, Alexander Bogomoev, Kurban Shiraev, Arthur Naifonov and Abdulrashid Sadulayev left no chances to their rivals.

The Russian women's freestyle wrestling team triumphantly won the championship with four gold medals. Olga Khoroshavtseva, Khanum Velieva, Ekaterina Bukina and Natalya Vorobyova became the best in their weight categories.

Thanks to the victories at the last World Cup, Russia received the right to put its athletes in almost all wrestling disciplines at the upcoming Olympic Games. At the moment, Russia does not have its participants in the weight category up to 125 kg, but the team expects to fill this gap in the upcoming international competitions in Budapest. The women's team will also fight for additional spots at the Games.
