Igor Novikov, Chief Researcher at the Lebedev Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was awarded the John Archibald Wheeler International Prize and Medal for his contribution to the general theory of relativity and black hole theory. The award ceremony will be held in May in Rome, TASS reports.

The report emphasizes the contribution of the “Moscow group” to the development of the theories mentioned. As far back as 1975, Igor Novikov and his colleagues formulated a theory regarding the existence of closed time-like curves, which later made it possible to explain some paradoxes of time travel. The theory is called the Novikov principle.

The Wheeler Prize is awarded for research and discoveries in scientific fields the American scientist was involved in. Thanks to John Archibald Wheeler, the concept of “black holes” was introduced into scientific terminology.
