The memory of one of the founders of Russian ballet will be immortalized in his homeland. A monument to Marius Petipa will be installed in Marseille. According to Vladimir Urin, who heads the Bolshoi Theater, the idea belongs to a group of Russian theatrical figures. They addressed the theaters to support this initiative, TASS reports.

Vladimir Urin recalled that two years ago Petipa’s anniversary was widely celebrated in Russia. The famous choreographer was born 200 years ago. It is his creative legacy that remains the solid foundation of the vast repertoire of the Russian ballet school today. Now the time has come to perpetuate his work in his homeland.

The appeal was signed by many illustrious choreographers, including Boris Eifman, Vyacheslav Gordeev and others. Dancers from Kazan, Rostov, Krasnodar, Nizhny Novgorod and other cities have already responded to the call. A special account was opened to raise funds.

Urin also said that the preparatory phase of the installation of the monument has come to an end. The monument was designed by sculptor Andrey Korobtsov and the architect Konstantin Fomin. The five-meter monument will consist of a full-length statue of the choreographer. A three-meter bronze sculpture will be installed on a stone pedestal two meters high. It is already known that granite for the pedestal will be brought from St. Petersburg.

The project is agreed with the city authorities, the monument will be installed in a park near the Conservatory of Music and Dance.
