The Russian language is becoming increasingly popular in China, the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper writes. This is evidenced by the results of the International online competition on Russian as second language.

The competition is aimed at developing interest and increasing motivation to study the Russian language, popularizing Russian culture abroad, and increasing the importance of the Russian language as a language of international communication. The tournament is organized by St. Petersburg State University and the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. Almost seven thousand people representing 131 countries took part in the qualifying round.

Of these, about six hundred Chinese citizens fought for victory. Almost half of them entered the second round, and nine became finalists. Chinese participants showed excellent level of Russian language proficiency.

The winners were determined in two age categories: from 13 to 17 years old and from 18 to 30 years old. All finalists got the opportunity to undergo state testing in Russian as a foreign language for free and get a state certificate.

The representative of St. Petersburg State University recalled that the number of Chinese students at the university is growing year by year. This year their number exceeded two thousand. This shows that in China, Russian education is becoming more and more popular.
