Bundestag calls for strengthening of Russian language in Germany

The Russian language in Germany requires support for the convenience of Russian-speaking residents of the country and the development of cooperation with Russia. This is stated in the request of the Left Party to the federal government of Germany. According to the authors of the document, too little attention is paid to the Russian language in the country, RT TV channel reports.

Nowadays, about six million people in Germany consider Russian their mother tongue, in 2017-2018, more than one hundred thousand students chose to study Russian as a foreign language. Meanwhile, representatives of the Left Party note, in German schools, the Russian language does not enjoy the support of the regional government. The authors of the request emphasize that Russian is the official or working language in a number of international organizations, and also ranks second after English among the most popular languages of Internet. 

The deputies called on the government to support the study of the Russian language for peaceful, diplomatic purposes and for economic cooperation. The left-wing party also stated that the support of the Russian language would provide an opportunity to increase mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries. The authors of the request are interested in the intentions of the German authorities regarding the Russian language.

According to deputies and experts, the importance of the Russian language in the Eurasian space will increase, primarily in the economic sphere. The authors of the request expressed concern about the possible closure of the Russian language department at the Institute of Applied Linguistics and Translation at the University of Leipzig.
