The famous Hollywood director Baz Luhrmann, who shot Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby and other famous features, wants to begin work on the film based on the cult novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, The Master and Margarita. According to him, making a film based on this legendary book was his cherished dream, The Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper writes. The director explained that after a couple of months he would begin to work on a biography film of Elvis Presley. And then he will turn to the film adaptation of The Master and Margarita.

The director said that his passion for Bulgakov’s novel lasted for two decades, and the dream became a reality. Work on the film will take place in collaboration with copyright holders on the Bulgakov’s masterpiece Svetlana Migunova-Dali and Grace Law.

Previously, producer Svetlana Migunova-Dali said that a fairly large number of leading Hollywood actors turned out to be fans of the work of Mikhail Bulgakov and expressed interest in participating in the project.

The film adaptations of The Master and Margarita have a long history. For the first time, a Polish director Andrzej Wajda turned to the novelin 1970-s. The film was released under the name Pilate and Others. In 1972, the Italo-Yugoslav film adaptation of the novel, filmed by Alexander Petrovich, was released. In Russia, The Master and Margarita was filmed by Yuri Kara, but the film was not released for more than 20 years due to litigation. It hit the big screens only in 2010.

Director Vladimir Bortko shot a 10-episode television series with a star cast. Its premiere took place on the Rossiya television channel, and despite the fact that more than 40 million viewers watched the series, the work caused a number of negative reviews from Bulgakov fans and film critics.
