Deputies of the city assembly of Keila (Estonia) voted to terminate the activities of Keila basic school with the Russian language of instruction. Parents of students and other representatives of the Russian community of the city held a rally near the city council building but this did not affect the decision of the deputies, according to Sputnik.

Fifteen deputies approved the closure of the school and only two opposed such a decision. The rally took place at the time of the meeting, which became crucial for the main Russian-language educational institution of the city. Dozens of people came to the building of the city assembly and unfurled posters with demands and appeals. Representatives of the Russian community demanded the observance of their constitutional rights and demanded that the “genocide of Russian schools” was stopped.

According to Oksana Post, the chairwoman of the supervisory board of the school, who initiated the rally, almost 180 people study in Russian at the educational institution. After the unification of the Russian school with the Estonian one, they will study in the state language, no special programs for Russian-speaking children are provided.

Oksana Post stated that representatives of the supervisory board and parents of students demanded the opportunity to educate their children in their native language or to postpone their transition into Estonian for several years, having prepared the students accordingly. In the present situation many students will have to be transferred to Russian-speaking schools of other Estonian cities.
