The European Aquatics Championship will be held for the first time in Russia. The championship of 2024 will be hosted by Kazan or Nizhny Novgorod, the member of the Bureau of the European Swimming League (LEN) Alexey Vlasenko announced. The European Championship takes place every two years, TASS reports.

According to Alexey Vlasenko, the decision to choose Russia as the host country of the European championship was made at a meeting of the LEN bureau, at which the capitals of the three upcoming championships were named. The upcoming tournaments will be hosted by the capitals of Hungary and Italy, and the championship of 2024 will be held in Russia.

Vlasenko said that, most likely, the best swimmers, divers and synchronized swimmers from Europe would compete in Kazan, but in case the city refused to host it, Nizhny Novgorod would take up this role.

Russia is traditionally one of the world leaders in the development of water sports. At the previous European Championships, Russian athletes took first place in the medal standings, winning 47 awards, including 23 gold ones.
