Russian is of great importance to our country, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a speech at a meeting of the Presidential Council on the Russian language, which was held on Tuesday, November 5, according to RIA Novosti.

The language is the basis for a spiritual and historical community of many different cultures and peoples, the president explained. It also largely ensures the sovereignty, unity and identity of the Russian nation.

It is Russia that is responsible for the conservation and development of the Russian language and Russian literature. This is especially important now, when gross and unceremonious attempts are being made to reduce the space of the Russian language in the world, the head of state emphasized.

Vladimir Putin called the Russian language, with its rich diversity, a part of the world cultural heritage. The development and preservation of the language cannot but be in the spotlight for the whole country, and for every Russian, compatriot, many millions of people who speak Russian.

According to the president, language policy is a priority for Russia. It should be balanced and thoughtful, consistent with modern trends. He called for the implementation of an effective system of support for the Russian language environment abroad and noted the important role of Russian-language media in promoting relevant content.

The head of state instructed to begin work on creating a single corpus of dictionaries, reference books, grammars containing the norms of the modern literary language for its use by government agencies, schools and journalists.
