Hessian Princesses. Traditions of Upbringing and Education in Russia and Germany. 1840-1918 Exhibition began work in Wiesbaden as part of the 22nd Elisaveta-Sergius readings, dedicated to the 155th anniversary of the birth of Grand Duchess Elizaveta Feodorovna. The exhibition tells about the peculiarities of upbringing and education in the imperial families of Russia, as well as about the charitable and educational activities of the empresses and grand duchesses, RIA Novosti reports.

A Hessian princess is a name for girls of the high-born families of the Hessian-Darmstadt Duchy, who became the wives of Russian tsars and members of the royal dynasty. The exposition is dedicated to their contribution to the development of the education system in Russia, as well as the principles of education that reigned in imperial families.

According to the organizers of the exhibition, it is valuable not only as a source of historical knowledge, but also as a pedagogical recommendation. The head of the supervisory board of the Elizaveta-Sergius Enlightenment Society Foundation Anna Gromova spoke about Wiesbaden residents and visitors’ great interest in the exhibition, which reveals details of the private life of Russian monarchs.

Russkiy Mir reported that services in local Orthodox churches and excursions to places associated with biographies of Hessian princesses would be held as part of the readings.
