Students from 144 universities took part in All-China Competition in Russian

Nearly 360 students from 144 universities in China are going to participate in the All-China Russian Language Competition, which has begun work in Beijing. For two days, students will demonstrate proficiency in Russian, written and spoken, as well as knowledge of the history and culture of Russia, Xinhua reports.

The organizers of major competitions were the Ministry of Education of China and Beijing University of Foreign Languages. Ministry spokesman Li Hai noted the special importance of Russian language skills for today. He announced that, due to the active rapprochement between Russia and China and cooperation in various fields, Beijing and Moscow feel the need for translators and specialists with knowledge of languages.

Participants were divided into three groups depending on the level of proficiency. During the competition, they will have to solve problems in knowledge of the Russian language, perform improvisational tasks on a given topic, do sight translating of the Russian text and answer questions about Russian history, culture and customs. Sixty of the best participants will be able to go to study or intern in Russia.

At the opening ceremony of the competition it was noted that the Russian language specialty was opened in more than 160 universities in China, more than 30 thousand students study the language of Pushkin. There are over a hundred centers of the Russian language in the country, opened with Russian participation. The Russkiy Mir Foundation opened Russian centers were in Beijing, Changchun, Dalian, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi'an, and Taipei. There are also Cabinets of the Russkiy Mir in four cities of the country.
