The UNESCO management has supported the initiative of Moscow, which proposed the establishment of the Dmitry Mendeleev Prize, RIA Novosti reports.

The award was established at a meeting of the Executive Board of UNESCO on the eve of October 21. It will celebrate the achievements of young researchers in the field of basic sciences, the laureates will be able to get 250 thousand dollars. The first award ceremony will take place next year. It is planned that two winners will be chosen - the authors of breakthrough discoveries and outstanding innovations.

The award is intended to consolidate the results of the International Year of the periodic table in the UNESCO program and emphasize the leading role of Russia in the field of basic sciences.

At the moment, this is the only and largest award in the field of basic sciences for sustainable development under the auspices of UNESCO.

This is the first time that Russia has filed a similar application with UNESCO. It is assumed that the prize will be awarded for outstanding achievements in chemistry, mathematics, physics and biology. The award and recognition at the international level will be a good opportunity for young scientists in scientific activity.

In addition, Moscow is a co-author of yet another initiative: the announcement of 2022 as the International Year of Basic Sciences.

Russkiy Mir reported that the UN General Assembly declared 2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements by Dmitry Mendeleev. In honor of the famous Russian scientist, various events are held in Russia and in the world, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Periodic Table by the Mendeleev.
