Memorial to Soviet partisan soldiers opened near Brussels

A memorial to Soviet soldiers who fought with the Nazis in the ranks of the Belgian Resistance was has been opened in the town of Rebecq near Brussels, RIA Novosti reports.

The memorial plaque was installed at the local cemetery, next to the burial place of 19-year-old Vladimir Talda.

The Red Army soldier died there in the fall of 1944. The initiators of the commemorative action were the members of the Belgian Remember Them patriotic association. The memorial commemorated all Soviet prisoners of war and partisans who died in Belgian territory. The organizers were local authorities with the assistance of the Russian embassy.

The ceremony brought together representatives of the regional management, employees of the Ministry of Defense of Belgium, public figures, Russian politicians and diplomats. Russian and Belgian children laid flowers at the new monument.

Russian Ambassador Alexander Tokovinin expressed gratitude to those who did everything to perpetuate the feat of the Soviet people who died on the land of Belgium. He emphasized that, in anticipation of the celebration of the anniversary of the Victory, such events were of particular importance. They recall the common pages of history that help strengthen friendship between peoples of different countries.
