First monuments to Nicholas Roerich and his wife inagurated in India

10.10.2019

The monuments to the Roerichs have been installed in India, TASS reports. The busts of the artist and philosopher Nicholas Roerich and his wife Elena Roerich adorned their house museum, which is located in the foothills of the Himalayas. The opening ceremony of the monuments was timed to the anniversary of the artist. This year marks the 145th anniversary of his birth.

According to the representative of the International Center of the Roerichs Larisa Surgina, these are the first monuments of the Roerichs in India. They were created by the famous Russian sculptor Alexey Leonov. They are based on photographs of the Roerich spouses.

Surgina noted that the anniversary of Nicholas Roerich is not the only one. This year marks the 140th anniversary of Elena Roerich and the 115th anniversary of their son Svyatoslav Roerich, who was also an artist.

The representative of the Russian Embassy in India Mikhail Ktitorov explained that the installation and opening of the monument is a rather complicated bureaucratic procedure. According to him, the Roerichs are iconic figures for residents of India and Russia. The name of Roerich connects two peoples and cultures.

The opening ceremony brought together residents of Naggar, fans of the Roerichs' creativity and ideas from India, Russia, Estonia, Belarus, other countries, as well as diplomats, journalists, representatives of the state culture ministry and local administration.
