Russia proposes to move the meetings of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly from the United States from 2020, TASS reports. According to Dmitry Polyansky, who holds the post of Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, the First Committee and the UN Disarmament Commission can meet in Austria or in Switzerland. The Russian diplomat emphasized that a third of the Russian delegation, which was supposed to take part in the meeting of the committee, did not get American visas. He suggested taking a break from work until the visa issue was settled. When all members of the delegation receive visas, Russia will be ready to resume the session.

The representative of the Russian Federation requested the UN leadership to take measures to stop the vicious practice when the authorities of one country impede the participation of representatives of other countries participating in the UN in the committee.

Washington, in accordance with its commitments, should provide access to UN headquarters for all official representatives of member states and issue them visas. Russia will not put up with such a course of the United States and is not going to abandon the legal right to form its own delegation to UN events, the diplomat sums up.

The representative of the UN Secretary General  Stéphane Dujarric said that the organization was concerned about the situation with visa issuance to Russian representatives. He promised that the issue would be discussed with the host.

Russkiy Mir reported that some members of the Russian delegation who were planning to take part in the UN General Assembly did not receive American visas. The issuance of visas was also refused to some representatives of the Russian Federation who were planning to become participants in the conference of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov promised that the United States would receive a sharp response to the refusal to issue visas. “Such rudeness cannot be tolerated,” he stressed. Perhaps the time came to raise the issue of relocating the UN headquarters, the minister added.
