Russian director Mark Zakharov passed away

Mark Zakharov, the artistic director of the Lenkom Moscow theater, an outstanding theater and film director, died in his 86th year after a long illness. He is known as the director of plays and features included to the treasure-house of Russian art, such as Juno and Avos, The Formula of Love, The Very Same Munchhausen, An Ordinary Miracle, Twelve Chairs and many others, RIA Novosti reports. 

In late August, Mark Zakharov was hospitalized with pneumonia. The director spent about three weeks in the hospital, after which he was discharged. According to representatives of Lenkom Theater, Mark Zakharov’s heart stopped after the second pneumonia.

The President of Russia Vladimir Putin expressed deep condolences on the death of Mark Anatolyevich to his daughter Alexandra Zakharova. He called the director a personality of colossal proportions, a man of extraordinary talent, inner freedom and dignity. The head of state noted that all the work of Mark Zakharov became a unique phenomenon in Russian art.

Mark Zakharov was the head of the Lenkom Theater for over 45 years. The creative take-off of the theater is associated with his name, it was one of the best theaters in the Soviet Union and Russia. In the era of Zakharov, the theater showed the talent of a whole galaxy of outstanding actors, such as Nikolay Karachentsov, Alexander Abdulov, Alexander Zakharova, Alexander Zbruev, Victor Rakov and others.

Mark Zakharov proved himself as a screenwriter  as well- he became the co-author of the script for The Prisoner of Château d'If, The Captivating Star of Happiness, “Sannikov Land”, White Sun of the Desert and others.

The venue of the farewell ceremony will be announced later.
