The first stone of the future Orthodox church has been laid down in the Lebanese city of Zahl. The temple will be dedicated to the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary “Unexpected joy", Sedmitsa.RU reports. The ceremony was attended by hierarchs of the Antioch Patriarchate, foreign diplomats and representatives of Lebanese public organizations.

The project of the future church is made in Russian architectural style. It will become the fourth Orthodox church in Zakhl. The foundation stone was consecrated by the Patriarch of Antioch and the whole East, John X, in the presence of the head of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk and Metropolitan Niphon of Philippopolis. A capsule containing a memorial letter in honor of the image of the Mother of God “Unexpected joy” was laid at the base of the church.

Russkiy Mir reported that a memorial plaque dedicated to the Russian presence in Souk El Gharb, (Mountain Lebanon) was installed in this city. A Russian school and a hospital used to work there thanks to the money donated by Russian patrons. Russian engineers helped to build the Church of St. George, which exists today.
