Restoration of the ancient Syrian Palmyra is done only by local authorities and specialists from Russia, the REN TV channel reports. According to the head of the Syrian city of Tadmore, Hani Dyes, Western countries talk a lot about the need to restore the monument of ancient history and even promise to allocate funds, but these promises remain only words.

The Syrian army with the support of Russian troops knocked Islamic militants out of the ancient Syrian Palmyra two years ago, but it continues to remain in ruins. Despite the fact that this historical monument is under the protection of UNESCO, the wounds inflicted on it remain untreated.

The efforts undertaken by the country's authorities, city administration and local archaeologists are not enough. It requires large-scale work of high-level professionals, which demands a lot of money.

Dmitry Abzalov, head of the Russian Center for Strategic Communications, notes that if international organizations allowed all countries to work directly with Syria without even providing funding, representatives of major universities would come there in no time. Scientists from around the world would take the opportunity to make many discoveries at the sight.

But so far, only experts from Russia are helping Syrian enthusiasts. Meanwhile, the time factor may be decisive in the matter of preserving and restoring the unique artifacts.

Note that a group of Russian archaeologists from the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences will conduct aerial photography of the unique monuments of Palmyra, destroyed and damaged by militants in 2015-2017. Research will restore the location and condition of the monuments. During the negotiations between Russian and Syrian specialists, the survey was agreed upon and will take place shortly.
