Italian photographer won Grand Prix of Andrey Stenin International Competition

The award ceremony of the laureates of the Andrey Stenin International Photojournalism Competition took place on September 10 at the State Historical Museum, Kultura TV channel reports. The competition was held for the fifth time, the theme of refugees and forced migration turned out to be its cross-cutting topic. Twenty eight photojournalists from seventeen countries fought for the grand prize.

The winner of the Grand Prix was the Italian photographer Gabriele Cecconi. The jury awarded him for The Miserables and the Earth series. It is dedicated to the refugees of the Rohingya people and the southern territories of Bangladesh, which turned out to be on the brink of slow destruction because of the migration.

French photographer Samir Al Dumi won in Breaking News category for his From One Conflict to Another shot.

The best single work in My Planet nomination went to the photo of Justin Sullivan from South Africa for his photo called Cut. This shot won an online vote last August. Russian Alexey Vasiliev won among the series with his My Yakutia shot, which managed to convey the peace and silence of his native land.

Among the sports shots, the jury singled out Decisive Blow, in which Indian Ayanawa Sil captured the photo instant of a water polo match.

The winners of the Portrait. Hero of Our Time series were chosen in two categories. Women from Arugam Bay by French Francis Russo won in the single photo group.  He managed to convey the exotic beauty of the inhabitants of tropical Sri Lanka, combining it with the theme of women's struggle for freedom. Among the series, the award was received by the Bangladeshi correspondent Mushfikul Alam, who showed the Rohingya women in a laconic and tragic picture called History of Torment.

The winner in the Inspiration nomination was selected for the first time. It was the Italian Andrea Alai with Enchanted shot. His heroine is a nine-year-old girl from Donetsk, who is fighting a serious illness - Crouzon syndrome.

Andrey Stenin died on August 6, 2014 near Donetsk, completing an editorial assignment. The competition is designed to preserve the memory of him. Its other goal is to support young photojournalists and open the way for them to the world of big photography. This competition has turned into a large international platform where everyone has the opportunity to express their own opinions. It opens the doors to big media for young photographers.
