Representatives of the Russian Cultural Center in Iceland are among the founders of the international VERA organization, which fights for the rights of migrants and maintains dialogue with the authorities of Iceland, seeking improvements in the lives of newcomers. According to the center chairwoman Anna Nerman, the participation of Russian-speaking representatives in the organization’s work will help to influence the position and status of the diaspora in Icelandic society, the website of the Moscow House of Compatriots reports.

Representatives of the Polish and Spanish diasporas also became the founders of VERA; communities from many countries were involved in the joint work. The members of the organization are trying to solve the problems that migrants in Iceland are experiencing. Until recently, it was predominantly a mono-ethnic country, and the process of transforming Iceland and a multinational state is only beginning.

According to Nerman, Russian-speaking migrants in Iceland face the same problems as people from other countries and continents. Namely: with a lack of information and assistance in the legal and domestic spheres, as well as in employment. The state should provide this assistance, and VERA raises this issue during meetings with representatives of the Icelandic authorities, Nerman says.
