The monument to Marshal Konev in the Czech Republic is a symbol of the country's liberation from fascism and the memory of 140 thousand Soviet soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the Czechs. This was recalled by a Czech parliamentarian Jaroslav Foldyna at a protest rally against the actions of local authorities, held on September 2 in Prague, RIA Novosti reports.

More than a hundred representatives of the public gathered at the monument to Konev to express their indignation at the actions of the administration. They emphasized that it was Konev who led the Soviet troops, which on May 9, 1945, drove the Nazis out of Prague, and the memory of this must be respected.

Earlier, the management of  Prague-6 district decided to cover with tarpaulin the monument to Marshal Konev, desecrated by vandals. The head of Prague-6 Ondrej Kolar declared: either the Russian Embassy transfers the monument to its territory, or it will be transferred to one of private collections.

The Russian embassy condemned this reaction of the authorities to the act of vandalism, it also caused sharp criticism from local residents. Many would like to know the victory of which side in World War II would have been delighted the administration of Prague-6. Czech interior minister Jan Hamacek recalled that scientists, not politicians, should deal with the interpretation of history.
