Russian Institute of Cinematography celebrates its centenary in Cannes

Russian Cinema Day is taking place on August 26 in Cannes as part of the Festival of Russian Art, TASS reports. Today's holiday is dedicated to the anniversary of The Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). The world's first cinematic university turns one hundred years.

According to festival producer Tatyana Shumova, Cannes is firmly inscribed in the history of Russian cinema. It is here that many figures of Russian cinema received international recognition.

A big delegation arrived at Cannes Film Day. The rector of VGIK Vladimir Malyshev is among its participants. He is joined by filmmakers, who once started their career in the VGIK, as well as those who are now educating the future generation of directors, actors, screenwriters and cameramen at the university, including Karen Shakhnazarov, Vladimir Khotinenko, Vladimir Grammatikov and others. They will present the work of their students, many of which have already taken place in the cinema, to the audience in Cannes.

The program of the Day includes short films and diploma works by university graduates. Hoffmaniada by Stanislav Sokolov and Bull by Boris Akopov are on the program.

VGIK turns 100: from the avant-garde to the classics. Movie artists are on their way to the profession is also timed to the anniversary.
