The 12th Towards Vyborg music and poetry festival, which emphasizes the common traits of Russian and Finnish culture, opened on August 17 in St. Petersburg and Vyborg. The organizer of the festival, which runs until August 25, is the Institute of Finland in St. Petersburg. This year's festival is dedicated to the Russian poetess Anna Akhmatova and the Finnish composer Armas Järnefelt, Yle broadcasting company reports.

The soloists of the Mariinsky Theater performed works by composers Valery Gavrilin and Boris Tishchenko, whose names are associated with Karelia, on Saturday in three towns of the Leningrad region.

A concert dedicated to the 130th anniversary of Anna Akhmatova was held in the library of the village of Komarovo on Sunday, August 18. Finnish musicians, singer Vuokko Hovatta and accordion player Harry Kuusijarvi presented a special program to the audience.

An exhibition of photo collages of Finnish artists dedicated to Akhmatova opened in another library in Vyborg.

The musical part continued with a concert in the Vyborg Cathedral of Peter and Paul, which featured works by contemporary Finnish composers. The guests from Finland presented to the Russian public the works of composer Armas Järnefelt, who is considered a classic in Finland. The 150th anniversary of the composer is widely celebrated in Finland and other countries. The performance of his works in Vyborg is very symbolic as he was born in this town.
