The archaeologists from Russia’s Far East, who have been excavating in Ecuador for many years, have discovered a site of ancient Indians who may have created the first ceramic dishes in the Americas. The culture of the ancient Indians is studied by the Russians together with scientists from Japan and Ecuador, the Kultura TV Channel reports.

The discovery of dishes, which may turn out to be the first made on the continent, posed many questions for scientists. By age, the finds correspond to the ancient culture of Valdivia, but they differ from other artifacts of this era in form and ornament.

Russian scientists from the Far Eastern University, Novosibirsk, Japan and Ecuador are trying to solve the riddle together. Russian archaeologists were even allowed to export the samples outside Ecuador for research.

The summer season has been also successful for archaeologists working in Russia. Russkiy Mir reported that elements of a Christian church of the 5th-6th centuries were discovered during excavations in the Kuban. Archeologists also found stone coffinettes of the pre-Mongol period in Veliky Novgorod
