Representatives of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Russian Military-Historical society will lay flowers at the monument. They will be joined by foreign diplomats and the president of the Historical Perspective Fund Natalia Narochnitskaya.

Memorial events are planned throughout the country. They are conducted by the Russian Military Historical society. Flowers will be laid at the monuments of heroes in Tula, Lipetsk, Orenburg, Pskov, Saransk, Kaliningrad. Remembrance Day will be also commemorated in France and Poland. The memory of compatriots will be honored with a moment of silence.

The monument on Poklonnaya Hill was the first in Russia to be dedicated to the heroes and victims of the First World War. It was installed in 2014, on the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of hostilities.

Russkiy Mir reported that the soldiers and officers of the Russian army during the war were notable for their massive heroism. More than a million lower ranks became cavaliers of the Order of St. George; about thirty thousand of them were full cavaliers. The Order of St. George IV degree were received by more than five thousand officers.

According to some reports, Russia lost more than two million people during the First World War. Fortunately, in recent years much has been done to stop calling it “forgotten”. A program dedicated to the First World War began a few years ago with documentaries, feature films and scientific research. Twenty monuments in honor of the fallen heroes appeared in various Russian regions.
