The summer Russian-Austrian Tandem language school works at the Pushkin State Russian Language Institute. Its program was prepared with the participation of specialists from the Austrian University of Burgenland, and the funds were allocated by the Austrian Ministry of Education.

Seventy people took part in the courses. Half of them are Austrian students studying Russian. The rest are Russians studying German. The name of the school was chosen on purpose. In language classes, students from Austria and Russia are combined in pairs. First, they speak with each other in one language, then in another, correcting the mistakes of their partners.

According to the rector of the institute Margarita Rusetskaya, the most effective promotion of the study of the Russian language abroad happens when the cooperation of educational authorities is developing well. She assured that the Austrian initiative was highly appreciated at the institute and expressed the hope that it would be continued.

Russian and Austrian students communicate with each other not only in joint classes. The program includes excursions in Moscow and the cities of the Golden Ring, lectures and quizzes, a special project – the shooting of video called Moscow unites and the Day of National Cuisine of both countries.

The organizer of the Tandem school, a professor at the University of Burgenland, Lyudmila Vashak, noted that students often chose Russian as their second foreign language — it was quite popular at the university.
