The Hospital of the Russian Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Response began working in Prokuplje 20 years ago. A memorial sign has been installed to honor that date, RIA Novosti reports. The Russian authorities launched a hospital in 1999 when NATO countries began bombing Yugoslavia. The opening ceremony of the memorial plaque took place on Thursday, June 27.
The first deputy head of the Russian Emergency Ministry, Alexander Chupriyan, recalled that when the threat of a bomb attack hung over Belgrade, all humanitarian agencies stopped working in the country. The number of refugees exceeded half a million, he recalled.
The country was in an international blockade and Russian Emergency Ministry vehicles almost immediately arrived to the country and began delivering humanitarian aid. The rest of the transport companies refused to undertake this mission because of the danger of being hit by NATO bombs.
Russia also sent to the Serbian the airmobile hospital with 42 doctors, the necessary equipment and a supply of medicines. It was launched on the outskirts of Prokuple. Then it turned out that the hospital had become a shield for the population of this area, since the NATO members did not dare to bomb it. During two months, Russian doctors helped more than three thousand people. Then the hospital with all the equipment was handed over to Belgrade.
