Russian schoolchildren received silver medals at the world championship in remote-controlled underwater robots. The tournament was held in the American city of Kingsport, RIA Novosti reports. The MATE ROV Competition has been held every year for almost two decades.

Russia was represented in the United States by high school students from Vladivostok who study at the Center for the Development of Robotics.

Underwater repairs, fish habitat restoration and underwater archeology have become the main theme of the current competition. More than seventy teams who came from nineteen countries fought for the victory.

The team from Vladivostok developed a new robot which was called Matryoshka. The Center for the Development of Robotics explained that the Russian students had created two robots at once, as the small one had to come out of the big one and inspect the pipe.

The Russians lost to California rivals in the final. Young residents of Vladivostok also won a special prize, winning the award for exemplary safety of engineering.

Russian schoolchildren performed in the Ranger category alongside forty-four school teams. Twenty-five more teams competed in the student category.
