Kolomna in Moscow region and Astorga, located in the Spanish province of Leon, became twin-cities. The signing ceremony took place in Madrid, RIA Novosti reports. The documents were signed by representatives of the administration of Kolomna urban district of Moscow region and Astorga mayor’s office.

Kolomna Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Astorga Chamber of Commerce also agreed on cooperation. Assistance in the preparation of documents was provided by Russian Embassy and Rossotrudnichestvo representation in Spain.

According to the Head of the Kolomna urban district, Denis Lebedev, the region is interested in Spanish investments, the development of tourist ties and educational exchanges. In turn, industrial enterprises of Kolomna expect to find a new market in Spain.

Plans for the organization of student exchanges are developed by representatives of Moscow State Regional Social and Humanitarian Institute and University of Leon. The authorities of the two cities are hoping for the intensification of tourist trips, which will make it possible to further intensify youth diplomacy. Astorga Mayor Arsenio Garcia Fuertes noted that agriculture is well developed in the Spanish city. He hopes that Russian consumers will be interested in sweets and high-quality wine from sunny Spain.

Astorga is one of the oldest Spanish cities; it was founded in 14 BC by Emperor Octavian Augustus. Its population is about 12 000 people. Astorga has many attractions that have survived from the times of the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages; it is also considered the chocolate capital of Castile and Leon.

As Russkiy Mir reported, a forum of Russian and Bulgarian twin cities was held in Varna recently. The signatures of twinning agreements were signed by the heads of Russian Tambov and the Bulgarian Dobrich. The village of Natukhayevskaya in Krasnodar Krai and the village of Kazashko of Varna region, where the descendants of the Kuban Cossacks live, also became twin cities.
