Moscow has initiated an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, TASS reports. It will take place on the evening of May 20 and will be dedicated to the new Ukrainian law as the official "state language.”

According to the First Deputy Permanent Representative of our country to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, Moscow is convinced that this document violates the “letter and spirit” of Minsk agreements. Diplomat noted that they had previously been approved by the UN Security Council.

It should be recalled that a law that will make even more pressure on those who speak Russian and on representatives of other national minorities will begin to act in Ukraine in two months. Many of its provisions are not consistent with the international obligations undertaken by Kiev, and contrary to the Ukrainian Constitution. The law also does not comply with Minsk agreements. It will only aggravate the split of Ukrainian society and further alienate the prospects for resolving the crisis that Ukraine is going through.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, commenting on the Ukrainian law, noted that Kiev lawmakers made exceptions for English language and languages of the European Union states. Foreign Minister concluded that the purpose of the law is an attack on Russian language, which is the language of everyday communication for the majority of the population of Ukraine.

As Russkiy Mir reported, Russia called on the OSCE to assess the laws on language and education in Ukraine, and the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Lamberto Zannier urged Kiev to ensure an inclusive national dialogue on these issues.
