Memorial plaque in honor of Vladimir Nabokov opened in the Czech Republic

A memorial plaque in honor of the famous Russian writer Vladimir Nabokov appeared in the Czech town of Marianske Lazne, the Consul General of Russia in Karlovy Vary Mikhail Ledenyov announced on his Facebook page. The opening ceremony was attended by Russian diplomats and representatives of the town administration.

A memorial sign was installed on the wall of the villa where the writer lived in 1937. Today it belongs to the Grandhotel Nabokov. Nabokov wrote Cloud, Castle, Lake short story in Marianske Lazne.

Russkiy Mir reported that the 120th anniversary of Vladimir Nabokov was celebrated at the end of last month. He was born in Saint-Petersburg, his father was a famous statesman. The future author of Protection of Luzhin, Masha, Invitations to Execution and many other works received an excellent education. Nabokov’s family left Russia after the October Revolution, and he spent his entire adult life in exile. The author continued to study and write in the UK. Until 1937 he lived in Berlin, where he earned his living by composing chess etudes for German newspapers. After that Nabokov was forced to leave Germany, fleeing from fascism.

He spent many years in the United States, where he taught Russian literature at the university, continued to write in English, translated works of Russian classics. Among his translations are The Word about Igor's Regiment, Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, Lermontov's Hero of Our Time and other masterpieces of Russian literature.

Nabokov became world-famous thanks to Lolita. The novel dedicated to love for a young girl became known in the whole world and became a bestseller. The book was written in Russian and English. 

The writer spent the last years of his life in Switzerland, where he was buried.
