Petro Poroshenko, who still fulfills his duties of the Ukrainian president, has signed the law on the state language, RIA Novosti reports. The signing ceremony was shown live on one of the Ukrainian TV channels.

Poroshenko assured the viewers that the document was “balanced and reconciled.” He is confident that no political party will be able to take the initiative to revise it.

Several proposals were earlier submitted to Verkhovna Rada to abolish the law, and the speaker of parliament could not sign the law and pass it on to the president until the parliament examined these proposals.

Russia considers the law repressive and claims that it violates the rights of national minorities living in Ukraine. In addition, it is also contrary to the international obligations assumed by Kiev.

Russkiy Mir reported that, according to the new law, Ukrainian would remain the only state language in all spheres of public life throughout Ukraine. Its usage will be mandatory for all authorities at all levels - from state to municipal. It will be applied in the service, health and education spheres. The new law does not affect only interpersonal communication and religion.
