One of the main streets of Havana - Fifth Avenue - has become a venue for mass races. The Marathon of Friendship, dedicated to the memory of the heroes who died in World War II, was held in Cuban capital for the 5th time. About 800 adults and children took part in the marathon.
The Immortal Regiment action also took place in Havana for the third time. Marathon of Friendship was opened by Russian Ambassador to Cuba Andrey Guskov. In his welcoming speech, he drew the attention of the participants and those who had gathered to the fact that during the years of the Great Patriotic War, Soviet citizens and Cubans fought side by side in the international brigades. Cuba took an active part in the fight against fascism. They supplied medicines and food to the warring and destroyed cities, and also fought with Hitler’s submarines in the border waters. In the course of the Marathon of Friendship, the participants ran almost 4 kilometres.
There were races of lesser extent for children. The winners of the marathon received Russian souvenirs and sports equipment, which the legendary Cuban high jumper Javier Sotomayor handed. The Immortal Regiment gathered diplomats and compatriots who brought portraits of warring relatives nearby Russian Embassy in Havana. The action will be repeated on May 9th. In addition, laying flowers at the monument to the Soviet soldier-internationalist, located in the suburbs of the Cuban capital, is scheduled for the Victory Day.
