May Day celebration took place in Houston. Russian compatriots of different ages who live in the United States participated in it. Open air meetings with Russian songs, dances and games has been held in Houston since 2001. The current one took place in one of the local parks, Russian America newspaper reports.

The tradition of May Day meetings was restored in Houston in 2001, thanks to Russian scientists from Novosibirsk who live and work in the United States. They decided to hold a bright event to meet with compatriots and to have a good and interesting rest. One of the authors of the idea, Efim Wainer, opened the meeting with a story about the history of the holiday. According to him, May Day appeared even in pre-revolutionary times, when the Bolsheviks gathered workers and peasants to discuss uprisings under the pretext of holding folk festivals.

Compatriots from Houston, who are going to modern May meetings, have a reason to see each other, speak Russian, sing Russian songs and play folk games, and also treat each other with Russian cuisine. This year pupils of the local children's Joy Theater took part in the event. They hang out the red flag as a tribute to the old tradition.
