Switching minority schools into the state language does not contradict the Latvian constitution. Such decision was made by the Constitutional Court of Baltic Republic, RIA Novosti reports. The lawsuit was filed by MPs from Saskana fraction.

According to the representative of Headquarters for the protection of Russian schools Elizaveta Krivtsova, who is one of the authors of the lawsuit, the court did not take into account any arguments of supporters of the preservation of education in Russian.

State Duma Deputy Konstantin Zatulin is convinced that the result of the reform that Riga is pursuing will be the complete elimination of Russian-language education. He noted that the decision of Constitutional Court naturally continues the path of Latvian authorities; it was not surprising.

Russian community of Latvia may still apply to the structures of the European Union, but Russian politician doubts that they will meet Russian-speaking residents of the Republic there.

As Russkiy Mir reported, Latvian Ministry of Education and Science intends to transfer education in schools to Latvian language from the 2020/21 school year. The initiative was also supported by parliamentarians and the President of Latvia, who called for a thorough preparation for this switch. Russian-speaking population of Latvia, especially the parents of schoolchildren, sharply criticized this law, noting that it will lead to a split of society and a decrease in the level of education in the country.
