Experts from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recorded frequent attacks on journalists and activists and the “atmosphere of intimidation” that prevails in Ukraine in their report. According to their conclusions, the crisis around the autocephaly issued by non-canonical Ukrainian church exacerbated tensions within the country, RIA Novosti reports.

The report notes that civil society activists and journalists in Ukraine are being subjected to “brutal attacks”, which, according to OHCHR, are committed primarily by radical right-wing organizations. UN officials pointed out that the participants of these attacks are not being punished. According to the authors of report, the current situation leads to the fact that citizens of Ukraine cannot openly express disagreement with the actions of authorities.

The situation around the autocephaly, which was issued by so-called new church of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, was given special mention in the report. UN officials point out that decisions regarding the “new church” have led to increased tensions between the Orthodox communities in Ukraine.

Russian media published another fact testifying to the systematic attack on freedom of speech in Ukraine. It became known that the majority of journalists from Russia would not receive accreditation to cover the presidential elections in Ukraine. According to a source from the Verkhovna Rada, depriving Russian media of access to election coverage is intended to raise the rating of current Head of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, Izvestia informs.
