Forgiveness Sunday celebrated today

10.03.2019

Orthodox believers all over the world observe Forgiveness Sunday on March, 10 this year. This particular day coincides with the last day of Maslenitsa Week. It is the last day before the Great Lent.

On Forgiveness Sunday its' important that people ask forgiveness of their friends, relatives, and believers they don’t even know, as to Orthodox priests. The forgiveness can be asked personally and by any means of communication, writes Arguments and Facts newspaper.

It's not recommended to eat meat today, but fish, vegetables and of course crepes are widely permitted.

On the last day of Maslenitsa Week, Forgiveness Sunday is the day people burn a straw effigy of Lady Maslenitsa, make fires and engage in pageants and fist fights. The church, however, disapproves of these pagan traditions and urges believers to demonstrate more humbleness ahead of earnest fasting during Lent.

It is recommended to clean not only the soul but the body, so it's an old tradition to go to sauna on Forgiveness Sunday. Many Russians keep this tradition today.
