Russian Nobel laureate Zhores Alferov passed away

Academician Zhores Alferov, the star of Russian and world science and Nobel Prize winner, died in Saint Petersburg. The physicist did not live two weeks to his 89th birthday. The name of Zhores Alferov is associated with the development of electronic devices, which became the basis for modern digital era. Alferov managed to become a successful teacher, the creator of his own scientific school and a deputy of the State Duma, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports. 

Zhores Alferov was awarded the Nobel Prize for the development of semiconductor heterostructures and the creation of fast opto- and microelectronic components in 2000. The inventions of Alferov and his students allowed humanity to make a huge step in the development of lasers, semiconductors, LEDs and fiber optic networks. People in all parts of the world use the discoveries of Russian physics daily in varying degrees. 

Zhores Alferov was awarded the State Prize of the USSR and Russia and was a full holder of the Order for Services to the Fatherland. He was a member of Academies of Sciences of the USA, China and several other countries. President of Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev called Zhores Alferov "the brightest point of our science".
