Russian River, flowing near Fort Ross and other places associated with the Russians' stay in California in the 19th century, overflowed due to heavy rains, which lasted several days. Because of the spill, some cities in the state can only be reached by boat or helicopter now. Authorities previously ordered to evacuate about 4000 residents of the disaster area because of the likelihood of flooding, TASS reports.

American media report that Moscow Road, which in one of the places runs along the River-River, is blocked by the rains. The city of Sebastopol is located nearby The abundance of Russian toponymy in this part of California state is not accidental. This is due to the stay of Russian mission here in the beginning of the 19th century.

Ivan Kuskov, a representative of Russian Northeastern Company, built the Fort-Ross fortress with the help of local residents in 1808–1812. It became the southernmost Russian colony in North America. Kuskov became the first commandant of Russian fortress in California. Today Fort Ross is recognized as a national landmark of the United States and a historic park.
