Hundreds of people gathered in the center of Jelgava, Latvia, on Monday, February 18, DELFI portal informs. Children and adults protested against the closure of the school, which works on a bilingual model. More than 600 people study there. It is the 5th largest primary school in the Baltic republic.

City authorities began to discuss the reorganization of educational institutions several weeks ago. They want a gymnasium to move to the building of this school. Most of the students of the bilingual school will be transferred to another one, which is located across the city.

Speakers of the rally are convinced that a good school will be destroyed under the guise of reorganization. As a result, the teaching staff will be disbanded.

Rally participants assured that they have no political motives. Parents’ indignation is caused by unprofessional attempt of the officials to solve problems with the premises to the detriment of the children.

Voting about the fate of school will take place in two weeks. If deputies support the decision to close the school, this will happen after the end of school year.
