The vast majority of the population of Kuril Islands do not agree with the transfer of the territories to Japan. This was indicated by the results of a study conducted by Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM). 96% of people responded negatively to the question of whether Moscow should transfer the islands to Tokyo. Specialists visited most of the settlements, including small villages.

Two weeks ago, VCIOM conducted an all-Russian poll on the same topic. Almost 80% of respondents believe that Kuril Islands belong to Russia.

Deputies of Sakhalin Duma are going to submit their statement on the results of the survey to the country's authorities and international organizations.

Speaker of regional Parliament Andrei Khapochkin recalled that Kuril Islands had become part of Soviet Union in the aftermath of World War II. The politician is convinced that Russian sovereignty over them cannot be subject to any doubts. Head of Sakhalin Duma emphasized that all his colleagues are confident that it is time to finish this discussion.
