Russia holds Memorial Day for fallen soldiers abroad

The Day of Remembrance of the Russians, who served outside the country, is celebrated in Russia on February 15, TASS reports. The first time It was remembered for the first time 8 years ago. Previously, an unofficial holiday was called the Day of Memory of Soldiers-Internationalists. 

The memorial day was timed to the date of the end of Soviet troops withdrawal from Afghanistan. 30 years have passed since the day of this event. Nearly 15 000 soldiers became victims of the fighting, which lasted a decade. 

This is a day of remembrance for all Russians who showed dedication and devotion to their homeland in other countries in the performance of military duty. Memorial celebrations, rallies and actions will take place throughout Russia. Veterans of the Afghan War, government officials, schoolchildren and students will attend the events. 

Two years ago, on February 15, the first Immortal Battalion action was held. Its participants marched with portraits of fallen comrades on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow. 

In the years that have passed since World War II, 1.5 million Russians participated in armed conflicts that occurred in Asia, Africa and Latin America. About 25 000 people died serving abroad. 

More than 100 Russian soldiers died during the military operation in Syria. Six of them were posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia.
