Nearly 15 rare languages have disappeared in our country over the past 150 years, TASS reports. According to Head of the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs (FADN) Igor Barinov, globalization leads to an increasing risk of gradual loss of small languages.
Nevertheless, all efforts are being made today to preserve even those languages which belong to ethnic groups whose composition does not exceed ten people. Igor Barinov assured that a successful language policy led to this result.
According to the estimates of scientists, there are 151 languages in Russia today, he added. Moreover, there are twice as many dialects and adverbs, according to various calculations.
27 languages are used in education. More than 70 languages are subject to study. About 10 languages of small nations are studied at electives.
Igor Barinov noted earlier that Russia being a multinational and multilingual country understands how important it is to solve the problem of preserving and supporting indigenous languages more than anyone else. Language is not only a tool for communication, but a huge layer of cultural heritage, a chronicle of the people, he emphasized.
Note, 2019 is declared the The International Year of Indigenous Languages of the World. The importance of indigenous languages for sustainable development, peace-building and conciliation became the theme of the year. The opening ceremony took place in Paris, where UNESCO headquarters is located, in the end of January.
Russia will hold about 700 various events and actions in the framework of the Year. It starts in early spring in Khanty-Mansiysk in our country.
