The International Year of Mendeleev’s Periodic Table starts in Russia, TASS reports. A meeting of the organizing committee will coincide with its opening, which will be hosted by the Head of Government Dmitry Medvedev. Participants, including government members, prominent scientists and public figures, will discuss the events included in the program of the Year, along with the state of chemical science and its importance for economic development.

The events dedicated to this date will begin in Russia on February 6 and will coincide with the Day of Science. It is celebrated on February 8, the birthday of the great chemist.

It should be recalled that the UN General Assembly at the initiative of Olga Vasilyeva, who headed Russian Ministry of Education and Science, declared 2019 the International Year of Mendeleev’s Periodic Table. In honor of the famous scientist, various events in Russia will be dedicated to 150th anniversary of Periodic Table’s creation.

As part of the opening ceremony, President of Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev will give a lecture called Where the Elements Come From. He will tell about the origin of chemical elements: in space, human biochemistry and modern synthesis. Famous British scientist Sir Martyn Poliakoff will also give lecture that is called Mendeleev as a Gift for Education.

An exhibition devoted to chemistry and its modern achievements will start its work at the Presidium of Russian Academy of Sciences. Before that, it worked in Paris at UNESCO headquarters. Mobile exhibition under the auspices of UNESCO will travel around the world throughout the year. The world's oldest copy of the Periodic Table is among the exhibits. As Russkiy Mir reported, it was recently discovered at Scottish university.
