Famous Russian actor performed Mayakovsky’s poetry in Hamburg

On December 5, Russian-speaking audience in Hamburg got a unique chance to see the famous Russian actor of stage and screen, filmmaker and writer Veniamin Smekhov, together with the artists of Taganka Theatre Maria Matveeva and Dmitriy Vysotskiy.

The unusual musical-poetical performance named The Backbone Flute took place at the Russian Center of Tchaikovsky House. The basis of the show was Yuri Lyubimov’s play Listen!, written in 1967. It’s co-author was Veniamin Smekhov. Besides poems and letters, the performance included Vysotskiy’s appeals to Russian poets Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Nikolay Nekrasov and Sergei Yesenin.

Veniamin Smekhov considers Vladimir Mayakovsky to be one of the key poets. His friendship with Lilya Brik gave expression to the happy honour of the memory of poet. Since 1973, Veniamin Smekhov was creating the performances based on Mayakovsky’s works Moscow Is Burning (1973), Listen! (1967), Playing Mayakovsky (1984), Lily Love Me (1996), Two Sisters (2000), Nekrasov - Mayakovsky (2014).


Hamburg audience was fascinated by the poetical performance and appreciated work of the actors. Moreover, the admirers of Russian poetry and theatre had a chance to listen to opening lecture by the historian of stage and screen, writer Galina Aksyonova. The audience has got a better understanding of the performance and the poetry of Vladimir Mayakovsky, the spirit of the age and his drama.


The event was organized by UMlautSpace project and Russian Center in Berlin.
