Mariinsky Theatre to open Russian Seasons in Germany

Mariinsky Theatre Company under the baton of the National artist of Russia Valery Gergiev is going on tour to Germany to open the Russian Seasons cultural project, the theatre’s press office, TASS informed. 

“Valery Gergiev and the theatre collective are opening the Russian Seasons international cultural project, which takes place in Germany in 2019. On the evening of January 7, the Mariinsky Chorus, the Mariinsky Orchestra, the Mariinsky Opera, and guest artists under the baton of Valery Gergiev will appear at the Berliner Philharmonie with the concert performance of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta opera,” the theatre’s spokesperson Anna Kasatkina reported. Lead roles will be performed by Irina Churilova (Iolanta), Najmiddin Mavlyanov (Count of Vaudemont), Roman Burdenko (Robert), Stanislav Trofimov (King Rene), and Yevgeny Nikitin (Ibn-Hakia). 

After performing, Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra will continue their European tour with concerts in Switzerland, France, and Austria. 

On January 9, the Tchaikovsky Gala will be performed in the Culture and Congress Centre in Lucerne (KKL Luzern). The programme includes Iolanta concert performance and Symphony No.5 by Tchaikovsky. On January 10, the Mariinsky Orchestra will perform at the Victoria Hall in Geneva. The programme includes the Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun by Claude Debussy, the symphonic poem A Hero’s Life by Richard Strauss, and excerpts from Sergei Prokofiev’s Cinderella ballet. Later these works will be performed at the Auditorium Maurice Ravel in Lyon (France).

From January 12 to January 14 Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra will perform in Austria three times. The Tchaikovsky Marathon including all 6 composer’s symphonies will take place at the Konzerthaus in Vienna, one of the most famous venues in the world.
